Capital gains tax - FAQ

What is capital gains tax?

Capital gains tax is the tax you owe on the profit when you sell an asset (stocks, crypto, property) for more than you paid. The rate depends on your country, how long you held the asset, and your income.

Short-term vs long-term capital gains (US)?

In the US, assets held one year or less are taxed at your ordinary income rate (10–37%). Assets held more than a year qualify for long-term rates: 0%, 15% or 20% depending on your taxable income.

What are the 2025 US long-term capital gains brackets?

0% up to ~$48,350 taxable income, 15% up to ~$533,400, and 20% above that (single filer, approximate). This calculator applies the band you select.

What is the UK capital gains allowance?

The UK gives a £3,000 annual CGT allowance (2024/25); gains below it are tax-free. Above it, most assets are taxed at 24%. This calculator deducts the allowance automatically.
