Frequently asked

How do you check if a portfolio is halal?

Two layers, following AAOIFI-style rules: (1) business activity - names in interest-based finance, alcohol, tobacco, gambling, weapons, adult or conventional insurance are non-compliant; (2) financial ratios - debt to market cap and non-compliant income must stay within limits. This tool screens every holding, weights it by value, and gives your whole portfolio a compliant percentage.

What is a "questionable" holding?

It means scholars differ, or a name sits close to a ratio threshold and needs a deeper look - for example some cryptocurrencies or companies with mixed income. It is neither clearly compliant nor clearly prohibited; confirm with your scholar.

What is purification (tatheer)?

If a compliant company still earns a small amount of impermissible (e.g. interest) income, that portion of your dividends should be given to charity to keep your wealth clean. This tool flags where purification applies; Alvest calculates the exact amount from your real dividends inside the app.

What are the compliant alternatives shown?

For non-compliant holdings we suggest well-known Shariah-compliant swaps in the same space - for example an Islamic bank instead of a conventional one, or a Shariah ETF instead of a broad-market ETF. These are starting ideas, not recommendations - do your own research and confirm with your Shariah board.

Is Bitcoin halal?

Scholars differ on cryptocurrencies. We classify Bitcoin and Ethereum as "questionable", while interest-bearing stablecoins are "non-compliant". Verify against your own reference ruling.

Is this result final?

No - these are estimates based on curated activity classification and best-effort public financial ratios. Shariah boards apply different methodologies, so always confirm with your board or scholar before acting. This is not religious or financial advice.
